In Celebration of Women's Month

August is known as a women's month in South Africa. The reason for this is because on the 9th of August 1956 over 20 000 women of all races and ages from every corner of South Africa marched towards the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The march was against pass laws. This march was organised by the Federation of South Africa Women ( FSAW) and it was led by four brave women:
  • Helen Joseph
  • Rahima Moosa
  • Sophie Williams
  • Lillian Ngoyi
I believe that it was brave of these women to do such a thing, to fight for what they belived was right. Even though there are women who are still struggling out there, there are campaigns that do empower women:
  • Women's Campaign International ( Empowering Women to Transform their Communities)
  • ONE ( Empower Women in the Fight Against Poverty and Preventable Disease)
This year the well known event management company Afropluse entertainment decided to bring the RnB sensation Anthony Hamilton to celebrate women's month in South Africa. The organisers planned a four day concert in different cities in South Africa:
  • Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg on August 16 and 17
  • Cape Town International Convention Centre on August 17
  • Mr Hamilton strikes a pose next to
     Mr Mandela's picure

  • People's Park in Durban.
The organiser's Afropluse entertainment said " the two Johannesburg shows were sold out and there was huge demand for tickets".
Instead of stikes, marches or women abuse we need more concerts like this to celebrate the women we have in our country.

  1. Women should indeed be celebrated, not just in August - that sends out a wrong message! Everyday of the year should be women's day!

    1. Yes Lucky cause at times we as women tend to bring one another down instead of empowering and motivating each other to better ourselves.

  4. I have to say thank you to those women because today we are free and it’s all thanks to them. I agree with you that we need more fun but it should be more South Africa artists especially women.

  5. I am quite impresed with the fact that the tickets are sold out for the two events, it really shows that people out there are supporting women and their hard work.

    1. The tickets sales really show that people are interested in the concert and support the idea behind the event which is to celebrate women.

    1. Im not sure about that statement but most people that I know who attended the event say they had a good time and the event was well organised and feel that the money they spent for the tickets was worth it.

  8. Times have changed; this celebration was made for us, Imbhokodo. We have moved from being weak house wives to the strong people. Even so, today still we are being abused even more than what happened in the past. Why is that? It is like they are undermining us in every aspect they get. This day is not being symbolised well and until they do that I will start and celebrate it.

    1. Its to see that there are still women out there who are being physically or emotionally abused day in and day out and still dont speak out about it because they fear for their lives. When you stike a woman you strike upon a rock.

  9. Women’s day should be celebrated every day not only on the 9th of August. The world is what it is because of us "women". I’m glad the day was a success. And I would like to give thanks to women who made the day possible.

    1. I always try to vision the world without women but nothing comes clear so I reckon the world is a better place with women and we should be loved and respected.

  10. i could have not said it better, Amanda Matshashe. Women are considered to be the "neck" of men, so we should be treated well with integrity and love at all times.

    1. And Tebogo we should learn to love ourselves first then love and respect others in order to be loved and respected back.
